I've heard little snippets from various Mac-using friends about MacOS X 10.3, but I didn't really bother looking into it until I ran into it at Ars Technica. From what I can tell from the stuff they link to, though, I'm not horribly impressed.
I'll certainly admit, the window tiling of Exposé is kinda cool and something I haven't seen before. Other than that, though, the code name to this version ought to be The version where we do all the stuff that Windows has had for years rather than Panther.
Showing the desktop? Check. Fast User Switching? Way ahead of you (not even a name change here!). Left-side navigation panes in windows? Yep. And wow, look at that, context menus if you happen to be an advanced user who can handle two buttons.
Given that all my readers are Mac-users, I'm sure I'll get an earful back ... bring it on, folks.

Posted by Nick at August 7, 2003 11:56 PM | TrackBackIn all honesty, Exposé's showing-the-desktop functionality works better than Windows'. Exposé does a better job of differentiating between desktop-hidden and normal modes. Of course, that's just part of Exposé's usefulness. Windows would be much more usable if it picked up the rest of Exposé.
I'm not sure what you're saying about contextual menus, since the Mac has supported those since about Mac OS 7.6, and with the right mouse button since Mac OS X 10.0. I'm not aware of any new functionality related to them in 10.3.
Posted by: Eric at August 8, 2003 12:53 AMCertainly could be true ... I don't have anything to work with other than the marketing drivel. And like I said, the actual window tiling part of Exposé is new and pretty cool.
Same with the context menus - I'm working off the blurb at the bottom of that page that talks about the contextual menus feature ...

Posted by: Laura at August 8, 2003 03:34 PMOK, OK, I admit it. I don't know jack about this stuff from any perspective other than those marketingese web sites, so I certainly don't have grounds to comment from a technical/implementation standpoint.
I did, however, consciously figure that this is the type of post that would let me see who's still reading. :)
So I guess, yes, I'm a Troll. I still stand by what I say, misguided as it may be. :P

Posted by: Nick at August 8, 2003 10:45 PMThere's a very similar function to expose's show all windows in microsoft windows, if you right click on the taskbar and click "tile windows horizontally" all the windows will be shown as small boxes, but not shrunk. In this menu you can also minimise all windows (same as windowkey+d) like the mac show desktop.
