While getting to work in Magic R&D designing cards will probably never happen, I do get to claim some modicum of design credit, though unacknowledged.
The flavor text there? Yeah, that was mine (or at least, I was one of the people that submitted it, though perhaps not the first). You'll have to take my word for it, as I even asked to see if I was the one they got the quote from and never got a response, but I was quite proud of that submission when I sent it in and rather gratified that it got chosen.
(OK, fair disclosure ... I thought I might have submitted "Amongst the deepest ..." instead of "Amidst the darkest", but I can't remember well enough, so I can't tell if I did submit it exactly as written, whether they made some edits, or whether somebody else submitted with this wording that got chosen over the one I thought I submitted. Still, close enough for me.)
