Good luck! I know about eight billion (OK, four) people who just started law school in the fall (side note: Laura Back is one of them; she might be reading this), so if you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll see if I can find someone who can answer them. :)

One random piece of advice: If you're planning to do public interest law and take advantage of the loan reimbursement programs law schools offer, don't count them for much. The fine print seems to all but ensure that nobody qualifies unless they're working in the middle of Montana or something like that.

How IS the first bit going? Do you feel overwhelmed? Is it taking 40 hour or more of your week? I've never been apprehensive about schooling before, but this scares me a bit.

Congratulations on the decision! I think you'll like it a lot.

I've been in law school for most of a semester now, and...well, I've gotten to where I'm definitely putting in more than 40 hours most weeks, but it's because I *want* to put in the time: I find it fascinating, and I like being immersed in it, and I really want to do as well as I can. I am occasionally overwhelmed, but for the most part, I'm enjoying being swept away in it.

I'm having a great time, and on weeks I put in more than 20-30 hours, it is out of interest/curiosity not necessity.

This is also my first time living in New York, so I make sure to divide up my time between working and playing. I havent found it as hard as it was represented to be.

Do any of you who are attending have part time jobs? I don't really want to go that road, but expecially if I don't get into UW and go somewhere private the loans are going to crush me.

Of course if I spell especially with an X I probably don't have to worry about admission anywhere. =P

I've heard some mumbling about ABA rules forbidding full-time law students from working their first year, but I'm not sure what the story is there.

I don't have a part time job, but I expect to make about 35-40k this summer which will help offset costs a bunch.

Are good summer jobs that readily available to law students or do you have connections somewhere?

It might have something to do with being in NYC - most of the top New York firms recruit heavily from Columbia and NYU, so we tend to get pretty good jobs. Not as easy for the 1L summer, but 2L and 3L are essentially guaranteed.

By comparison to Tom, I expect to make nothing at all this summer: most of the really interesting summer jobs for first-years (working for a judge, for instance) are unpaid. I'm guessing this may turn out to be true for you, too, if you're leaning toward public interest work.
