Self-Effacement

I am so, so sick of it. It's apparently the cool thing to do in law school and I swear I'm going to punch the next A student who tells me they're not very smart, or the next freak with an 80-page outline who tells me that either a) they hardly studied at all, or b) they're going to (or did) horribly. You are all liars and you need to stop. We're here because we're smart. We're different levels of overachievers, and that's it. We all understand the curve - no one is going to kow tow because you got an A+ or think you're undeserving of oxygen because you got a C-. And really, since people don't talk very openly about their grades, there is no reason to set everyone up for that illustrious and arbitrary mark. So Just. Stop.

17 Minutes

That's how long it took my evidence professor to say something I could take notes on yesterday. It was frustrating.

And then twice more he spent nearly half an hour pontificating on the philosophy of evidence. Sure, sure, theory is nice and warm and fuzzy, but it's getting toward that time in the year when people have briefs due, and 60-page papers to write, and this test is going to be MULTIPLE CHOICE. That means theory is shit and we need to know the rules. Plus, the theory of it is sometimes dumb and counter to common sense. A theoretical argument won't get shit admitted in court, and there will be no room for it on my test. In the meantime, this two hour class could be done in one. And he was asked a very direct question numerous times ("Is quoting yourself hearsay") and he refused to answer it until he'd gone on to other material and pontificated some more. In fact, he was going out of his way to be a pain in the ass and confuse us. Even after all that he wasn't going to answer but I asked *again* before class was over.

One class last week he spent over 40 minutes of class talking about the width of the earth, the probability of matching birthdays, and the shortest path a spider could take to get to the back of the room.

Many people are discussing plans to stop coming to class and just study on our own. I think it makes a great deal of sense, at this rate.

Grr. Betrayed.

I sat in front of a woman just now in Mock Trial and she up and moved saying, "I can't sit behind people who surf." and then started talking to the profs about how lame it is when people use their computers in class to do non-class stuff. Bitch!

24

I watched this show for the first time ever last night. I'm trying to find good stuff to feed my TiVo and I thought I remembered Nick liking 24. Anyway, nearly the first thing they do is show the President fishing in "Lake Oswego, Oregon" . . . a quiet lake surrounded by tall grasses with two large, snow-covered mountains in the nearly-immediate background. Come ON people. I grew up in Lake Oswego. It's man made, it's surrounded by multi-million dollar houses - not grass, you can't see mountains like that, and people *don't* fish there - you'd be seriously ill if you ate a fish from LO. If you're going to open a map and pick a lake from a random state, and least pick one that's more than 10 miles from a major metropolis.

Well, well, well ... Cupertino's "copy machines"?

I bet Mr. Jobs had nothing to say about copy machines today ...

I wonder how many of the Apple faithful will notice that we've been doing this since Q1 2007 2005 2004.

Kittens - Lots of Them

I'm fostering seven kittens right now. This means that I take them home and care for them until they are old enough to be adopted, but is after their second vaccination. I currently have two litters - the older litter makes up four of the seven, and they go back in a week. But the three babies aren't even heavy enough for their first vaccination yet, so I will probably have them another 4 weeks or so. In descending size order they are:

1. Parissa (Percy) - an aloof but beautiful girl kitty that is white with black spots.
2. Crazy - a completely wild, food-aggressive critter that insists on sleeping on my pillow up against my head.
3. Max - an incredibly sweet boy. He purrs easily, loves to be held and toted around, and has very pretty markings, but not very soft fur.
4. Peaches - cute cute cute. She's sweet and gentle with an all white face and gray spots. She's not aloof like her sister, but not as much of a lover as Max or the little boys.
__________________________

5. Squeak - an adventurous, all-black, simeon-looking critter. Plays with the bigger litter often while Peaches come to sleep with me and the other babies.
6. Puff - formerly the runt, but now round around the middle like you wouldn't believe. He is a lover and a dickens. He likes to sleep in my neck or on my chest - as close to my face as possible. If I keep one, it will be him. Even a week and a half ago when you'd think you'd squish him to death with a kiss he would scale my entire body (starting on the floor) to get up and be in my face.
7. Mitts - a perfectly marked little boy (with mitts and a white stummy, like his brother Puff) that is incredibly sweet if not a little wimpy. He has luscious fur and still only weighs a pound.

I'm not sure why I felt like telling you about my kitties, but I did. If you want to see pictures of them, go to my MySpace page (Kara Govro). I also posted a short video, but it won't be up until the admins decide it's not porn. =P

Hope you're having a great Labor Day weekend!
